Aftercare
I most commonly send off tattoos with RecoveryDerm on them, unless otherwise specified (skin sensitivities, allergies, preference, etc) It is engineered to let the tattoo breathe while keeping water, dirt, dust, debris out.
The particular brand used recommends a wear time of up to 24 hours, however, you can remove it at any point.
Do your best to avoid working out, excessive sweating, submerging - this can trap moisture under the covering and waterlog the tattoo.
Rub at a corner until there is enough for you to grab and gently pull outwards away from the center. I find it best to remove in the shower, using warm water to help neutralize the adhesive and minimize any excess trauma to the tattoo site.
FOR SARAN WRAP:
When you get to where you where you are going, remove saran wrap and follow instructions below
Once removed, wash tattoo with a gentle scent free anti microbial hand soap
Pat dry, or allow to air dry. DO NOT RUB TO DRY YOUR TATTOO, this can cause wear and tear on what is essentially an open wound and cause complications in healing.
Once dry, apply a VERY LIGHT LAYER of
- Aquaphor (one of the most ubiquitous products that seems to work for most everyone)
- Coconut oil (food safe//unscented//unflavored)
- skin safe Vitamin E oil
- Shea Butter
2-3x daily, washing with gentile hand soap and water before each reapplication.
You should barely see a sheen, it should only be minimally glossy. If you can see texture in the application, it is applied too heavy and will not allow the skin to breathe. It is more easy to do too much, than it is to do too little as long as you are keeping your tattoo clean.
After 2-5 days once scabbing has begun, you can switch to a
- Plain unscented lotion
- Coconut Oil
- Skin safe Vitamin E oil
- Shea Butter
To start your day, and end your day. Once again washing the tattoo before each reapplication. Feel it out as to how long you continue to do this, generally seems best to do for a week or two, depending on how involved your tattoo process was.
You know your body best, listen to it.
As always, feel free to get in contact with me on any questions regarding your tattoo.
It is in my personal belief and experience that it is very easy to over care for a tattoo, but if kept clean, you really can’t do too little.
AVOID SWIMMING/PROLONGED SUBMERGING/DIRECT SUNLIGHT FOR 2-3 WEEKS
DO NOT PICK AT, RUB, SCRATCH AT YOUR HEALING TATTOO. THIS CAN CAUSE A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS IN HEALING, AS WELL AS CAUSE SECTIONS OF TATTOO TO FALL OUT OR HEAL IMPROPERLY.
Remember to wear sunscreen when you can to help preserve your skin and tattoo from the aging and diminishing effects of UV
